This Seattle band are the bearers of a most unsettling legacy, and their only real album release is a legendary underground death metal nugget.

The one problem is that Katharsis 666 has been bootlegged so much that, while there are supposedly just 200 copies in existence, it appears as though Sombre released more copies before deciding against letting anyone know. Imagine a decent garage punk band that's been playing together for a week or sonow ask them to imitate early Venom without any real energy or enthusiasm and a singer who seems to have only one or two possible intonations per song. Quite a little find and highly recommended to those into this sort of thing. They should have been more worried about the fact that the band's name wasn't on there! It was limited to 2000 copies. If anyone is interested my copy has the lyric insert, a product listing flyer, and is autographed on the front of the sleeve by someone named "Paul Reeves."
Vinyl Records On this EP Living Death finally started sounding like they band they'd surely wanted to be all along. Depending on the quality of the release and the sleeve, you can expect to pay between $500 and $1200 for this. There are a couple of good tracks here, but don't go into this expecting some sort of power metal masterpiece. The large pay difference isn't really something I can explain either. The value of your Vinyl or CD could be Wow!

So, the copies of this release with solid red vinyl are actually harder to find and are considered more collectible than the regular super hard to find other version. While not as rare as the Exterminator or Genocidio albums, this one is getting tough to find origials of, along with concurrent albums from fellow Brazilians Vulcano, Dorsal Atlantica, and Mutilator. There are many represses in multiple colors for this bootleg too, and they are much cheaper. You wanna know how stupid I am? Surely The epic "17 Day" is the highlight, a morose but deftly hymn of slow metal charm. This was limited to 400 copies. Very few people were likely to really believe that the members of heavy metal bands were scholars of the religious esoteric, and those that did were usually either the victims of economic fleecing by preachers and/or bored suburban teens with too much time and LSD on their hands. From private pressings to releases from miniscule labels, here's a bunch of the metal albums that make collector's drool and haunt their sleep with visions of "that" record they must have. Bassist Matt Vinci does a stellar job, as do guitarists Tony Truglio and Pete McCarthy with their stout riffs giving way to solos built with ability and style. Also the sleeve apparently bothered some distributors, so an impossible to remove white sticker was placed over the face and breasts of the victim in the artwork on a bunch of copies, of which mine is sadly one. One of the more hard to find indie metal releases of it's (or any other) time, Razor's debut EP isn't all that great in light of their subsequent next two albums. This is a shame, because unlike many style over substance Cali bands, these guys had the real metal goods. Songs are fairly decent, production is good, vocals mildly irritating. You can find this release for between $300 and $800 depending on the condition, and depending on whether or not it's numbered or not. And so, the first, mega-rare, very indie Heavy Load album finally caresses my eardrums. This album is still floating around fairly regularly, just not as much on live auction sites. I passed this one in the racks a few times before realizing it was a Living Death album! In other words, it's a release that comes sealed inside of a commemorative plaque. The material is similar to early Morbid Angel, though not quite as unique. Certainly never been played. Naturally, this makes their value go up dramatically, and it's also fairly difficult to locate one of the blood copies. But after you hear their music, sincerely heavy and full of Sabbath/Maiden influences, you realize that these guys were tough, honest metal-heads in the great indie eighties sense of things regardless of race. Lots of psudeo-evil sound effects thrown around the album too, which adds to it's overall cheese factor. And then there's that sleeve. You rarely see this one come up for sale. It does appear on static sales sites like Discogs, but never from multiple sellers at once. The seller included two extra mint condition albums for free. Vocals are a touch over the top at times (falsetto stuff, mildly irritating) and there are some tricky arrangements here and there as well. It sells in spurts on auction sites, and it's pretty regularly listed on sites like Discogs, but it is not cheap either.

Wicked and thrashy US metal, this EP from Black Task straddles the lines between death, thrash and traditional metal better than almost any other release. Most of those can be played without another thought, since the price per disc is relatively reasonable at $5 to $25 or so. The label had problems and the copies were either sent out as promos or given to friends, so the EP was never available through retail. A fairly unknown California metal act, Ruffians delivered a few demos and this EP back in the day, but failed to make much impact. But somehow, the raging old school thrash of the title cut defeats all that, as do "Chainsaw" and "Save Their Souls."
