A recent survey by the ACGME found that a majority of residents classified themselves as healthy, but when further evaluated by individual lifestyle factors, namely sleep disturbances, low energy levels, and depression, residents were found to have scores well below the average of their non-resident peers. The diseases of the mind which are shrouded in mystery have always held a certain allure to me.
Personally, I feel that psychiatry is a field that relies on the psychological and social aspects of pathology in addition to the biological aspects that are over-reinforced in our general medical education. I also worked as a junior doctor there for the National Health Service before moving to the US in pursuit of an exciting new adventure with my husband (and a residency in Psychiatry!).
